New Exhibition Flight by Sacha Hutchinson

Flight - A celebration of our Atlantic sea birds
Sacha Hutchinson
02 March – 27 April 2026

Flight by Sacha Hutchinson opens at Daróg on 02 March, bringing a study of Atlantic seabirds to focus at a time when our coastal birdlife faces increasing pressure.

Based in Barna, Co. Galway, Sacha Hutchinson is a practising artist with a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design (2010). Working primarily in gouache and oil, her practice explores nature’s vulnerability, with a particular focus on Ireland’s Atlantic seabirds. Alongside her visual work, she writes environmental poetry and has been published in several poetry journals and art anthologies. She is also a member of the Hare’s Corner Collective.

Flight is a celebration of our Atlantic seabirds and a reflection on their fragile existence. Hutchinson’s work observes both native and visiting species, drawing attention to their declining numbers and the urgent need for conservation. Her paintings capture birds in motion, suspended in air, skimming the shoreline, or inhabiting coastal meadows — revealing both their strength and delicacy.

Many of the works in this exhibition were inspired by photographs taken during visits to islands along the Irish coast. Cycling the west coast and travelling to offshore islands, Hutchinson documents her encounters through daily thumbnail sketches, written observations and diary entries. These studies form the foundation for larger works in gouache, a medium she favours for its capacity to render subtle colour shifts and the quiet beauty of feather, light and movement.

While visually celebratory, Flight carries a strong environmental message. The exhibition reflects on the threats facing coastal bird populations, including habitat loss, plastic pollution, overfishing and climate change. Through both paint and poetry, Hutchinson invites viewers to look closely and to consider the responsibility of protection and stewardship.

Hutchinson has exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges visual art and literature, deepening the emotional resonance of her environmental themes.
