Beyond the Surface | Elaine Cunningham
We're pleased to welcome Claregalway-based artist Elaine Cunningham to Daróg with her solo exhibition, Beyond the Surface. The exhibition is part of our ongoing arts programme, which sees us showcase the work of six local and regional artists throughout the year.
With a BA in Contemporary Art Practices and a background in medical science, Elaine's work is shaped by a lifelong interest in observation, patterns and the textures found in the natural world. The colours and patterns of the west of Ireland landscape influence her paintings, alongside structures encountered through the microscope.
Her work explores the connections between the natural and microscopic worlds, and the repeated forms, layers and transformations found within both.
More recently, her interest in puppetry and three-dimensional work has begun to influence her paintings, with relief and semi-sculptural wall-hung forms extending beyond the edges and surface of the panel. Working with encaustic, Elaine builds tactile, layered surfaces that invite close looking and touch.
As Elaine describes:

Le Chéile: An Evening of Creative Conversation with Elaine
As part of the exhibition, Le Chéile: An Evening of Creative Conversation with Elaine will take place on Monday 7th December (7–9pm). Tickets (€25) include an artist talk, wine tasting. Booking essential: https://www.darogwinebar.com/artevents
The evening includes an artist talk and wine tasting, offering an opportunity to hear more about Elaine's practice, creative process and the ideas behind Beyond the Surface. There will also be an opportunity to view the exhibition and perhaps pick up a special piece of artwork as an early Christmas gift.
Beyond the Surface is on display at Daróg Wine Bar, 56 Lower Dominick Street, Galway, until Monday 11 January 2027.
